![]() ![]() This article explores the implications for feminism of reading and writing about women in the southern African war zone and its aftermath by focusing on Zoe¨ Wicomb’s novel David’s Story (2000), which grapples with the figure of a female militant and the myriad violations to which she is subject. Similarly, feminist understandings of rape have variously constructed women as victims of patriarchy and as potential agents of resistance (see Brownmiller 1976 Marcus 1992). Two strands of feminist thought diverge in conceptualizations of the woman warrior: one finds in war a potential realm of gendered equality and female liberation another associates women with nurturing and lifegiving qualities, linking them to an ethos of peace and pitting them and their interests against war (see Cock 1991, 189–91 D’Amico 1998, 120). ![]() Feminist discourses have aimed to render such bodies visible in and of themselves but have been embattled when faced with the figure of the female militant. ![]() ![]() The raped female body suffers a similar fate: figured as a rhetorical sign, its disfigurements slip from view (see Samuelson 2002 Sielke 2002). In the war zone, women’s bodies are simultaneously saturated with and stripped of meaning in the process, they are rendered invisible. ![]() ![]() This smart, sweeping fantasy with a political edge and a slow-burning romance will capture fans of The Lumatere Chronicles and An Ember in the Ashes. For those who don't know the novel, Heartburn takes place mostly in an elite Washington, D.C., world of journalists and politicians and is a roman à clef about the break-up of Ephron's marriage to reporter Carl Bernstein, of Watergate fame. Some of its jokes haven't aged well, such as wisecracks about lesbians and Japanese men with cameras, but the pain that underlies its humor is as fresh as a paper cut. I've read Heartburn three times since it came out in 1983. It's sentimental to say so, but when such a beloved writer's voice is stilled, you really do feel more alone, less armored against the world. Unfortunately, society can’t accept that a 36-year-old woman is content in this dead-end job, with no husband or child. There is a training manual to follow, she can mimic her co-workers’ intonation, and understands exactly how to meet sales targets and please customers she feels “reborn” as a “normal cog in society”, “a being with meaning”. She recalls being at nursery school, seeing a dead bird and exclaiming: “Let’s grill it and have it for dinner!” As an adult, she watches her sister soothe her crying baby: “I looked at the small knife we’d used to cut the cake still lying there on the table: if it was just a matter of making him quiet, it would be easy enough.” When working in the convenience store, however, Keiko knows exactly what to do. Keiko has always struggled to behave appropriately. She describes it as one might a lover: the sound “ceaselessly caresses my eardrums” when absent, “I picture the brightly lit and bustling store, and I silently stroke my right hand, its nails neatly trimmed in order to better work the buttons on the cash register.” K eiko Furukura has an uncannily intense relationship with the Hiiromachi Station Smile Mart, where she’s worked for 18 years. ![]() ![]() ![]() * “Twelve-year-old Minni and her older brother Sanjay might live in a poor neighborhood in India, but they have big dreams: to finish school, get good jobs, and maybe live in one of the tall buildings where water runs from the taps. It just pours freely out of the faucets in the bathrooms and the kitchen-something she has never witnessed before. While working, Minni is confronted by the abundance of water everywhere. In normal airway epithelia, the CCS-induced increase in ASL ATP concentration was sufficient to induce purinoceptor-mediated increases in ASL height and MCC, via inhibition of epithelial Na +-channel-mediated Na + absorption and stimulation of Cl − secretion through CFTR and the Ca 2+-activated chloride channels. ![]() Polarized tracheobronchial epithelial cultures from normal and cystic fibrosis (CF) subjects responded to a range of CCS by increasing the rate of ATP release. In this study we tested the hypothesis that cyclic compressive stress (CCS), mimicking normal tidal breathing, regulates ASL volume in airway epithelia. Luminal ATP, via interactions with apical membrane P2-purinoceptors, regulates the balance of active ion secretion versus absorption to maintain ASL volume at optimal levels for MCC. We hypothesized that stresses generated by airflow and transmural pressures during breathing govern ASL volume by regulating the rate of epithelial ATP release. ![]() The superficial airway epithelium exhibits complex regulatory pathways that blend ion transport to adjust ASL volume to maintain proper mucociliary clearance (MCC). ![]() In the lungs, the first line of defence against bacterial infection is the thin layer of airway surface liquid (ASL) lining the airway surface. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() With heart-pounding action, and plenty of surprises, the gripping conclusion to Stacey Kade's Project Paper Doll series delivers a powerful finish that will keep fans hooked to the very end.
